"The least it deserves"

Did I use this properly?

"This is a very serious topic. The least it deserves is some childish sarcasm. "

Because I know it's usually used like this:

"Tony works hard and for free, so the least he deserves is gratitude."

But in the first sentence I was unhappy with the treatment my topic received, therefore I said that. But now I am unsure whether it actually expresses the right thing.
