The leaning rules had been bent by leaners

In the past few years, the leaning rules had been bent by leaners to promote more sells. As a result, many bad loans were made against the principles. That's how the US real estate market cames crashing down, because of the non-qualified loans. I could do another thread about this but the welcome mat may get pulled out from under me.

What do the underlined parts try to convey in the above context? Thanks.

You are quite sure it was "leaning rules" and "leaners" and not "lending rules" and "lenders"?? This doesn't seem like a native English speaker wrote this.

The probably meant leining rules which is the same as mortgage rules (mortgage is the correct term for this context). So a clearer way to say this would be "the lending rules had been bent by the lenders."

"many bad loans were made against the principles" is pretty clear. It means that the loans made against the borrowers principle were bad.

Is this a mistype? The only "Leining" I can trace is to do with the Torah

We will need to hear from Goodman. I think he may have simply mistyped the word.

I assume the word (or idea) 'lien' was intended instead of 'leaning' and/or 'leining'.
