the lead/leading role

The Phantom loved an opera singer, Christine, and often sang to her with his magical/magic voice. He even asked the managers of the Opera House to give Christine the lead/leading role.

For a start, are magical and magic interchangeable in the above?

Second, do lead and leading fit in the context and mean about the same? Thanks.

Hi Angliholic. Happy New Year, and congratulations on making the top 25! In my opinion, magic means real magic, if such there be, while magical can mean like magic.
