The late bell

He gets up as usual the next day and heads off to school ... In the distance he hears the late bell, and he wants to run to it, but he does not.

Hi,

What does the late bell in the above refer to? Thanks.

In the States, we refer to it as the tardy bell. It is rung to indicate that if you arrive in class after that time, you are tardy. Ramifications vary from setting to setting.
