The kitchen

Mum and dad cooked dinner and cleaned the kitchen. I saw this sentence as an example of a simple sentence on YouTube.
Why do they use a definite article. "the" before "kitchen". What makes the reference specific in the context?

Jigneshbharati Mum and dad cooked dinner and cleaned a kitchen. The above sentence is of course grammatical, but very strange as mum and dad didn't clean the kitchen where they had cooked dinner. CB
