The killer hurricane swept across the area

The killer hurricane swept across the area, leaving thousands of people homeless.

Hi,

Is it correct to interpret the above as "The devastating hurricane ...?"

By the way, is "across" in the base sentence optional? Thanks.

Top answer

The killer hurricane = it caused death The devastating hurricane = it caused destruction, not necessarily death. I feel 'across' is needed to imply movement.
