Hi! I need your help with this combination of words: the Junior Prom that I saw in the following context
We have squandered our planet’s resources, including air and water, as though there were no tomorrow, so now there isn’t going to be one. So there goes the Junior Prom, but that’s not the half of it.

A junior prom refers to the annual dance event held for juniors in highschool, toward the close of the school year. Most students gear up for that big event. Thus, if there were no tomorrow, the dance would not be held, and that- in the teenage mind of a junior in highschool might feel like a full half of the problem caused by the total death of the Earth.

I see irony as the key thing here.
The writer says that a huge disaster is occuring, and that there will be no tomorrow. In this context, I see 'there goes the Junior Prom' as a very ironical comment. It's a deliberate understatement. The writer could just as easily have said something else, like 'The world will end tomorrow. That means I won't have to pay my Visa bill.'
