The is often prefixed to the names of rivers

0 Hello forum!02br
00On reading an article on the usage of articles, I came across a rule which made me write this post:02br
02br
01i00"The02i00 is01b00 often02b00 prefixed to the names of rivers; and when the word 01i00river02i00 is omitted, as "01i00the02i00 Mississippi," "01i00the02i00 Ohio," the article indicates clearly that a river, and not a state or other geographical division, is referred to."02br
02br
00The rule clearly says : "the is 01b00often 02b00prefixed" and not "the is 01b00always02b00 prefixed", so according to it there must be some cases where a name of a river doesn't take "the". Do you have any idea what rivers don't take "the"?02br
02br
00I would be grateful for any comment on this.0-

0 In reality, 01i00the02i00 is most likely 01b00always02b00 used, but the author didn't want to take a chance that there may be some little river somewhere on some remote continent whose name never has 01i00the02i00 in that situation. Like the rest of us, not being able to name every river in the world, he did as any pruden

0I know it as "the Amazon River."02br

00I think this is meant to ask about the contrast between: 01i00The house overlooks Lake 01i00___02i00 02i00and 01i00The house overlooks the ____ River02i00.02br

00We don't (generally) use a "the" for lakes (with a very few exceptions), but

0 I know it both as 01i00the Amazon River02i00 and 01i00River Amazon02i00. Back to front names when the general word precedes the specific one hardly ever takes "the".0-

0Really? So you would say "I'm taking a vacation to see River Amazon"? 02br
02br
00That's interesting. I would not.0-

0Yes, I would 05000 though in all probability I'd rather say "I'm taking a vacation to see the Amazon (River)."010id1
