Grammar

The inserted clause.

1. A poor harvest in 1889 caused a governor of Korea's Hamgyong province to prohibit soybean exports to Japan. Japan requested and received compensation in 1893 for their importers. The incident highlighted the growing dependence Japan felt on Korean food imports.

2. He gave her gifts he thought she would like.

I'd like to know if the underlined clause of #1 is similar to it of #2 in the role.
Thank you in advance for your help.

The incident highlighted the growing dependence [ that] Japan felt on Korean food imports. He gave her gifts [ that] he thought she would like. They are both relative clauses, if that's what you mean.
