The increase in population vs the increase in the population

Hi,

Could anyone explain why the following highlighted parts does not use article "the" while the noun is countable, plural and specific?

"The biggest increase in population in the northern cities occurred in 2001, and this corresponds with the biggest decrease in the number of people living in the southern villages"
