The implied words 'there are' in an inserted clause.

By 1900, table tennis was popular throughout the world. Although table tennis was called a variety of names, among them Whiff Whaff and Gossimar, by 1902 most amateur players referred to it as Ping-Pong.

I think the words 'there are' is implied after "among them."
If so, I'd like to know why.

Among is a preposition. Prepositional phrases can be adverbial or adjectival.
It further describes "variety of names" which is a noun phrase.
