The implicit meaning of ‘a separate section of the library’
The passage below is from The Library A Fragile History by Andrew Pettegree.
Colon took his first plunge into the international book market in Italy in 1512, during a long and tedious attempt to rescue the fortunes of his older brother after a marital catastrophe... But it was the emperor’s diplomatic business that gave him the opportunity to explore at length the major emporia of northern Europe: first Antwerp, the great metropolis of the Low Countries, then Aachen for the imperial coronation, and a long sortie down the Rhine. He bought in Mainz, the birthplace of print, and in Strasbourg and Basel. It was in Germany that he was able to sample the books of the next great controversy convulsing Europe, Luther’s battle with the Catholic Church. Although his own allegiance to Catholicism never wavered, Colon bought freely the books published on both sides of the debate. His extensive collection of Luther’s works would later cause his heirs some embarrassment, and would be culled from the library by the Spanish Inquisition. It was on this tour that Colon met Erasmus, at this point a tepid admirer of Luther’s courage, if not his more trenchant denunciations of the papacy. Colon bought no fewer than 185 books by Erasmus, the only author honoured by a separate section of the library when they reached their destination in Seville.
In this paragraph, I want to make sure the implicit meaning of ‘a separate section of the library’.
I think it means ‘each of the Catholic Church and the anti-Catholic church’.
(Am I right?)
If not, what does it really mean?
Thanks in advance.
Stenka25 The implicit meaning of ‘a separate section of the library’ When the Erasmus books reached Seville, the library there set aside a special place for them, the Erasmus Wing, or the Erasmus Annex, or the Erasmus Room, or something like that. It is not that they separated the two kinds of Erasmus books, they separated Erasmus's books from all the other books they had.
