The if clause conditional

This question was in the Lebanese brevet official exams for students passing to highschool.
Rewrite the following sentence as indicated without changing the meaning:
factories poured their chemicals directly into streams and rivers, so water became poisonous:
1- If...

the question is: is this considered unreal conditional? would the answer be" If factories hadn't... water wouldn't have become.
or
If factories don't...., water wouldn't become.

That is past, so you need a past equivalent:

If factories hadn't...the water wouldn't have become....

But isn't this based on fact? we just assume it's unreal because the sentence was written in the past?
Also, in which case would it be right to write:
If factories didn't, water wouldn't ( also unreal )
If factories don't water wouldn't ( my original answer )
