The horror of that meal

Hi,

I have a question concerning the above mentioned phrase that I found in the book "Parrot and Olivier in America". People are on board a ship and they are going to burry a man who died on board (they are going to throw him in the ocean). Before the burial, one person is watching the sea:

"From the poop I saw some large fish alongside. The horror of that meal."

I don't understand "the horror of that meal", maybe it is because the preposition "of" and the pronoun "that". Who is terrified of what? I would be happy if you could explain it to me.

Many thanks

The deceased is about to become dinner for the large fish? The structure "the ( noun ) of something" is a common way of expressing "how ____ that was/is". The nerve of that woman to speak to me that way!

Most likely the fish were going to eat the dead man. The speaker finds this a horrible thought.

Don't confuse "horror" -- the sense of revulsion, in this case -- with "terrified" -- "extremely afraid". No one was terrified.
