Termites are eaten in some places in Africa. They're kind of pan roasted over a fire. Supposedly, they are very nutritious and even tasty. That's one of those things that I'll take someone else's word for.
If you simply cook something by roasting, frying, baking, boiling or broiling it, can you say a recipe is involved? I would think that a recipe includes a list of ingredients of other things that are added for taste. If the only thing on the list is the item being prepared, then it's not a recipe.

Hmmmm. I still don't see it. (Cicadas.) But maybe if I hadn't started early on shrimp, I'd feel the same way about them.

On Saturday I dug up a nearly adult cicada in my yard. First time I've ever seen one under ground. It was pale, didn't have any wings yet, and limited its reaction to waving its legs feebly. I reburied it, but I don't think I'm hoarding it when it comes out I'll share it with the whole neighborhood.
The idea of eating it didn't occur to me.

It would have, were you a woodpecker...they went into a frenzy here a few years ago when we had a sudden spike in the grasshopper population..

And they're irresistible to cats...once saw a stray moggy disappear into the bushes after one, emerging a moment later with the buzzing thing held firmly in her mouth...she ran past us, unwilling to drop her prize but completely nonplused by the fact that it wouldn't shut up..r

So it looks as though they're kosher. (If not, then you become ritually unclean by touching a dead one.) It makes sense. Usually insects don't provide enough protein to be worth harvesting, but when they come like this, it must have seemed a shame to let them go to waste. Especially when they've just destroyed your crops.
