the highest building - the highest of the buildings

Let's assume you're looking at ten buildings You're having a conversation and at some point you say,

If I knew how high the highest building is, ...
If I knew how high the highest of the buildings is,..

Which of the above is correct?

They are both fine, because you have already limited the sample to the ten you are looking at. Also, I think "tall" is better than "high" in this context.
