(the) hard pillow to swallow

Hi,

I know that you normally say that something is 'a hard pill to swallow'.

"I'm sure that he didn't care that she remarried. The fact that she married his sworn enemy was the hard pill to swallow."

Would 'the' be acceptable in the above-given sentence? I thought that it could maybe work since it's not-this-but-that kind of situation.

Thank you.
