The ground

read the ground and worked a likely area and found a small piece, so headed off in search of Mark to let him know about it.

Hi, I don't understand the term 'read the ground', could anybody help me?

Thanks.

It could be 'I analyzed the situation'... or it may be that he actually interpreted clues/marks on the ground. We really need more context, LIJ.
