The grass was let grow (?)

I'd like to know if the sentence is acceptable.
To me it sounds a bit weird.
I've never known the verb 'let' to be used like that.

I think it's not too uncommon in the active voice, especially in the command form.. Let him be. Let her play by herself. I let the water boil too long.

Passive "let" with a bare infinitive is not used much anymore. In modern English we generally use the bare infinitive in the active voice and, on the rare occasions we use it all, the full infinitive in the passive voice.

We let the grass grow. / The grass was let to grow.
