(The) grass

Teachers:
1. I got a job cutting grass at the cemetery.
2. When I was a child, I loved lying on (the) grass.

I didn't include the definite article in #1. In #2 I think it's optional. "The grass" means the grass that was there wherever I lay down.

Is that correct?
