The glycerin was allowed to settle

Here I don't understand "was allowed", can you please explain?

I'm left with a messy mix of the gelled biodiesel and the glycerin. To separate them, I added the entire mess to a beaker. Once it was in the beaker,
it was stirred and the glycerin was allowed to settle at the bottom
