(The) gifts

"It was my birthday. My family and friends brought me (the) gifts."

No gifts have been mentioned. I think zero article is correct.

But "the gifts" doesn't sound too wrong either. It's the gifts I expected them to bring, given it was my birthday.

What do you think?

If no gifts have been mentioned, and no gifts are being pointed to, or shown to the addressee, or anything like that, then you would use zero article.
