(The) German beer

I ask one other, last, question today, I promise.

I walk into a store. There used to be many brands of German beer, but I don't see any German beer now. I come up to a store clerk. Which is right to ask:

What happened to German beer?
What happened to the German beer?

Which is correct? The first seems too general.
The second seems too specific. The clerk might say: what German beer are you referring to?

What would you use? Maybe I should say:
What happened to all the German beer?
What happened to the German beer you used to carry?
