If the word sounds like it could begin with a "y," use "a."

Hi
Chineselindsayan Ute

I should be a Ute.

Use 'a' for every word whose first syllable starts with a 'you' sound.

For example, a university, a unicorn, a uniform.

But the universe because there is only one universe.

Hi Yoong Liat,

It is quite possible to use 'a universe' in English. For example:

"His ideas and mine are a universe apart."

There are many other examples to be found of such usage.

Hi Yizhivika

Thanks for the information.

I agree with what you said. Apart from 'the universe', 'a universe' can be used in other contexts.
