The furry edge of a flank

More of the cellar comes into view: the cold, gray, cracked concrete floor; the once whitewashed walls, now gray and streaked with green slime, gashed and oozing sand ... He lowers himself another step ... and thinks he glimpses the furry edge of a flank pulling itself out of sight.

Hi,

Does the bolded part in the above make sense to you? If yes, what does it refer to? Thanks.

I assume "flank" refers to the flank (side) of some sort of furry creature. He glimpses this creature momentarily, and then it disappears from view, hiding itself somewhere in the depths or recesses of the cellar.
