The function of 'way'

Hello!

Here is an extract from a dialogue, actually in AmE. What does ''way'' mean in the following sentence? Is it used to emphasise degree?

''... Both of these are way too accurate.''

I would say both are equally standard (in AmE, at least) and way is just informal. The distinction between standard and non-standard English is quite different from that of formal and informal style.
