the function of 'due to'

hi teachers,

what is the function of 'due to' in this sentence?

"Dengue fever is due to mosquitoes."

According to his grammar book, it functions as an adjective.

As far as I know, 'due to' means 'caused by'.

1) Does it function as an adjective?

2) Is the pattern S+LV+SC?

3) Is it a compound preposition?

4) Can we call a compound preposition an idiom?
