The function of 'Did'

Hello,

Could you please tell me what`s the function of "Did" here in this sentence?

"But never .... in all the times that I had this dream did the knight say to me, 'Come on baby, I will put you up in a great condo'.

Can it be omitted? For example 'Said to me or told me'.
