The French Open are...

I've been watching the French Open tennis tournament on Eurosport for years. One of the sponsors has been and still is Bet-At-Home. Their commercial used to declare in previous years: The French Open is brought to you by bet-at-home.com. This year they have changed it to: The French Open are brought to you by bet-at-home.com. A native speaker says that. Does it sound correct to anyone?
