The French

Which are correct:
(They are supposed to mean the same.)

1-The German scientists asked the French scientists if they had any new information. The French scientists promptly replied that they did not.

2-The German scientists asked the French scientists if they had any new information. The French promptly replied that they did not.

3-The German scientists asked the French ones if they had any new information. The French scientists promptly replied that they did not.
