The for less common software

The maker I'm working for has software called XYZ Updater. This is not a big one like Microsoft Word. Do you usually add 'the' to een a less common product?

No. You should not add the definite article before proper nouns in English. This includes the names of software products, regardless of how famous, popular or common they are.

There's usually some explanation.

He stayed at the Ritz hotel. (the hotel named after Ritz; the + hotel, not the + Ritz)

Indeed. In this case it is that the names of all hotels and rivers take the definite article, but the names of states don't. Of course there are exceptions to the rule.

We stayed at the Hilton.
I have worked at the Angel & Royal Hotel.

The Nile flows through Egypt.

I misunderstood you. I don't think many people would add the article if there already was one: We stayed at the the Ritz.

Then these proper nouns require 'the', and this is a traditionally usual thing?

There are exceptions, but the names of hotels, trains, boats, oceans and seas, newspapers, rivers and museums normally require the definite article, and so do plural geographic names. The Philippines is a plural geographic name, just like the United States, the Netherlands, the Alps and the Hebrides.
