"the following" versus "that follows"

1) The following chart identifies [...]

2) The chart that follows, identifies [...]

Which of, "... the following ..." versus "... that follows ...", is preferred usage? I'm involved in the software business and will ask a colleage to review a document I've authored. More often than not, folks want to change my usage of "... that follows ..." to "... the following ...". Many years ago, I wrote a number of technical books (through Macmillan) - I submitted the first chapter of my first book and the editor returned the chapter, with corrections of my usage of "... the following..." to "... that follows...". From that point on, I've religeously used, "... that follows...".

So, which is preferred usage, in general?

The punctuation of the second is wrong. They should read:

1) The following chart identifies [...]

2) The chart that follows identifies [...]

Both are fine grammatically. I suggest #1. The weak point of #2 should be obvious.
