The following sentence using ‘and’ is acceptable, right?

The following sentence using ‘and’ is acceptable, right? If I wrote 'She was a mass communication student, and I was a law student,' it would be longer, wouldn’t it?

She was a mass communication student and I a law student.

Keep in mind that as it is presently written, both she and you share a time frame, any change in her time frame will affect yours. Grammatically, however, yes it would be acceptable but does not convey any different information.
