The Following Are ..., the Followings Are ....

Hi.

I've always been torn between whether to use, "The following are ..." or "The followings are ..." when I've wanted to point the readers to more than one thing. Which should I use? I've preferred to use, "The following are ...." Please enlighten me.

Thanks.
