The Following …

This is more or less my sentence as it stands: "The following is from an unedited and thus unpublished work I have named [insert title here]. The piece has to do with poverty in Greece."

Can I say "The following" and then not immideatly after have a : and then put what's suppoed to be following? Meaning can I even have that one sentence "The piece has to do with poverty in Greece" after?
