The flat of a revolver

From the book "Black sheep, run", a mystery novel by Bart Spicer:

"A man named Dalton, Dead. Had I run into him? Yeah, I'd run into him with the flat of a .38"

What part of the revolver is the flat? Is it the barrel, the grip, the muzzle?

I googled it without results. Maybe it's old American slang. The book was published in 1951.
