The first time when/that/- we met

Hi everyone!

As usually, I'm asking you to help me polish my lyrics. So here's what I have:

I never dreamed I'd call her mine and take her by the hand
I drowned in those blue eyes of hers the first time (that / when) we met

Which of the options is correct? (as I know, it's usually without the preposition (-), but it ruins my tempo, so if any of them is applicable, it's what I need here).

P.S. - Does it sound good overall?

Thank you in advance!
