The first thing we did

Hello,

Is the sentence correct and what is this tense?
'The first thing we did was clean the dishes.'

Anonymous Is the sentence correct It’s grammatical, but I would use the present tense of be instead of the past tense because cleaning the dishes is still the first thing you did; that fact hasn’t changed. Incidentally, wash the dishes is more idiomatic. The first thing we did is wash the dishes.

  • If you’re asking about clean , it’s the plain form of the verb; hence, it is not inflected for tense.
