the first step of all should be to choose a fitful friend of yours.

About maing friends, in my opinion, the first step of all should be to choose a fitful friend of yours. It is obvious that meeting strangers or even having some talks with them does not mean you ought to treat it as a friendship.

Does the above sound good, especially the line in bold? If not, how would you reword it? Thanks.

Thanks, Philip.

A fitting friend make good sense to me.

By the way, does it come across as "a proper/suitable/appropriate friend?"
