"The first of these objects I possessed already; the mystical centre of Xuìpaní’s energy - a crystal as it was." Colon or Semicolon?

"The first of these objects I possessed already; the mystical centre of Xuìpaní's energy - a crystal as it was."

I have a friend who thinks that a semicolon should be used, and I think that a colon should be used in this instance, and I was wondering if I could get a third opinion on it.

Well, the main problem is the latter part of the sentence. What does 'as it was' mean? Otherwise, I agree that a colon is needed, since the part following is not an independent clause.

  • I suppose you mean this: The first of these objects I possessed already : the mystical centre of Xuìpaní's energy, a crystal.
