The first kind

Hi.
"Consider a function f(x) in one dimension. If f(x) has a relative extremum at x0 , then either f’(x) = 0 or f is not differentiable at x0. Either the first or second derivative tests may be used to locate relative extrema of the first kind."

What is 'relative extrema of the first kind'?
Thanks

Relative extrema of the first kind means relative extrem[es] where f'(x) = 0 (as opposed to where f is not differentiable). This is because the f'(x) = 0 condition comes first in the author's list of extrem[es], not necessarily because a consensus exists on what type of extrem[e] is called "the first kind".
