Is this sentence completely natural (both written and spoken English)?

The fire was raging and the environment had become completely untenable.

If I am not mistaken it's the adjective untenable that's making the sentence very formal. What about these?

The fire was raging and the environment had become completely intolerable.

The fire was raging and the environment had become extremely suffocating.
