The film industry

Vinod Khanna passed away on April 27 and the film industry came together to pay their last respects to him.

Do we need "the" because "industry" is a singular countable noun modified by the adjective "film"?
If we use "a" article in "a film industry" would it be grammatically correct and mean the same?

We use "the" because there is only one film industry (or only one in the relevant country). "a film industry" would sound peculiar in that context.

And of course since "industry" is a count noun, it requires some kind of determiner. But as GPY said, not in this instance the indefinite article "a".
