La femme fatale - it's actually French, and the expression dates back to before the First World War when French women, in the eyes of Americans, were thought to be seductresses and home wreckers. Literally translated it means : "deadly woman". The image was adopted by Hollywood in the 1920's and stuck to a number of stars such as Jean Harlow and Mae West.
