'the fact that' or noun clause

'the fact that'

When must it be used and when is it optional?

Alternatives to this wordy phrase?

Aside from the fact that you are hungry...

Aside from that you are hungry...

Does this noun clause work here without 'the fact'?

It doesn't really work without 'the fact'-- yet 'the fact that' is one of the most anathematized phrases in style manuals (and I agree). I try my utmost to recast the sentence: Aside from your hunger....
