The "eye" or the "eyes?"

Is there any kind of difference in the sense of meaning, or a faltering in grammatical propriety, regarding whether "eye" is singular or plural in sentences such as these?:

He looked him straight in the eye.
He looked him straight in the eyes.

Thanks.
