Isn't it an Australian expression?

I've only heard of Aussies say it, never in my life heard of an American person say this.

Yes I know what it can mean.

Just wonder if it's the most predominant saying in Australia and the Britain as is the expression "sweetie"/"sweetheart" in the US and Canada.

When I lived in Britain (some years ago) the term was used ironical and infrequently for one's darling, and seriously and often for one's dessert.
