(The) executives

Hi all.
Could you explain this one please:
"One of the attendees at the meeting, a disgruntled shareholder, took to the floor to criticize executives."
Why not 'the executives'? It's the executives at this meeting. Is it because it's 'some' executives and not others? Thank you.
