The estate was settled

Hi,

I encountered the sentence "My wife inherited property and the estate was settled."

Does "the estate was settled" mean that the distribution of the estate of the deceased happened in paper with or without actual distribution?

I'm not sure what "settle" means in this context.

Neither am I, and a quick look through on-line legal dictionaries did not help. I think either is possible, but more likely the will has been read, the arrangements agreed upon, and the assets liquidated, but physical distribution may well not have taken place.

Hi,

That's a legal question that we are not qualified to answer.

If you google terms liike 'settle', you'll find some information.

You might also want to look into the legal definition of 'an estate'.

Hi,

Thank you, guys!

>more likely the will has been read, the arrangements agreed upon, and the assets liquidated, but >physical distribution may well not have taken place.

I googled the phrase once again, and many examples seem to show that your understanding is correct.
