I found that endangerment means something like to put in danger... but for the moment is still doesn't make sense for me

Let's say you have a great speech about the ecological dangers of the modern world, about the endangerment of the rain forest. And the first two sentences of your speech would be the following: "The rainforest has significantly decreased in size in the last years due to industrialization, for example because of the building of highways.
